At The Children’s School, we believe that every student is unique and that each individual’s uniqueness contributes to the vibrant, diverse community we cherish. This year, we are excited to introduce the “Cool Is Subjective” campaign, a year-long initiative designed to help our students, faculty, staff and families engage in meaningful conversations about individuality, self-acceptance and inclusivity.

Purpose of the “Cool Is Subjective” Campaign

The “Cool Is Subjective” campaign stems from our commitment to supporting students as they navigate the complexities of understanding themselves and fostering inclusive relationships with those around them. This initiative is closely aligned with our Building Character and Community (BCC) curriculum, which emphasizes respect, responsibility, empathy, assertiveness, self-control, cooperation, flexibility and integrity.

The BCC curriculum has been instrumental in guiding our students to develop these character traits, but we identified an opportunity to further enhance their ability to see themselves and their peers as inherently valuable and “cool” in their own ways. This campaign is not about pointing out differences, but rather about enhancing our students’ self-awareness and appreciation for the diversity of qualities that make each person unique.

How the BCC Curriculum Integrates with the “Cool Is Subjective” Campaign

The BCC curriculum is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy, focusing on developing core character traits that are essential for personal growth and positive community engagement. By teaching respect, responsibility, empathy, assertiveness, self-control, cooperation, flexibility, and integrity, we provide our students with a strong foundation for building meaningful relationships and contributing to a supportive school environment.

The “Cool Is Subjective” campaign takes the principles of the BCC curriculum a step further by actively engaging students in exploring and celebrating individuality. Through this campaign, we aim to deepen their understanding of the BCC traits by applying them in the context of recognizing and respecting the diverse interests and strengths of their peers.

Promoting Self-Acceptance

By encouraging students to explore and embrace their interests, strengths and personalities, we aim to build a foundation of self-confidence. Understanding that “cool” is subjective empowers students to appreciate their own unique contributions to our school community.

Fostering Empathy and Respect

Our activities, assemblies and discussions will focus on understanding and valuing the diverse perspectives and talents of others. By recognizing that what one person finds “cool” might differ from another’s viewpoint, we create a culture of mutual respect and empathy.

Enhancing Inclusivity

The campaign will provide opportunities for students to practice inclusivity, ensuring that everyone feels valued and accepted. Through collaborative projects, role-playing scenarios, and community-building exercises, we will strengthen the bonds within our school.

Engaging Families and Staff

We recognize that fostering a supportive environment extends beyond the classroom. The campaign will involve faculty, staff and families in activities and discussions, creating a united front to promote individuality and inclusivity.

What to Expect

Throughout the year, we will implement various activities, assemblies and projects tailored to different grade levels. In addition, a BCC flier will go out monthly, featuring a “Cool Is Subjective” section that will include ways for students and families to engage with the campaign. These initiatives are designed to reinforce the theme that “cool is subjective.”

These will include:

  • Interactive Workshops: Students will engage in workshops that focus on self-expression and understanding diverse perspectives.
  • Themed Assemblies: Each assembly will highlight different character traits, such as respect, empathy and responsibility, tying them back to the overarching theme of individuality.
  • Classroom Activities: Teachers will integrate lessons that celebrate uniqueness and encourage students to share their interests and talents.
  • Family Involvement: We will provide resources and suggestions for families to continue these important conversations at home.

We are excited to embark on this journey together, celebrating what makes each of us unique and building a more inclusive, empathetic school community. Stay tuned for updates and ways to get involved in the “Cool Is Subjective” campaign. Let’s make this year one of growth, understanding, and mutual respect!

Together, we can create a school environment where every student feels seen, valued, and cool, just the way they are.
