New Face Around Our Space: Tim Smith

Meet Tim Smith, our new middle school teacher! He’s joining the seventh grade team as the math and science teacher. He’s native to the Midwest – Illinois/Iowa – but has lived in Atlanta for 23 years.  In between the Midwest and Atlanta, Tim bopped around the world and lived in Venezuela, Germany, Switzerland, Canada and even Pennsylvania where he worked with children with developmental disabilities. He has taught in Atlanta for 23 years and is looking forward to many, many more years.  Tim has three children: two grown daughters living their best lives in NYC and Atlanta, and a 15-year-old son at Decatur High School.  Tim’s hobbies include going to his son’s soccer games, playing guitar, playing board games, and looking for various fungi in the southeastern forests!
What are you most excited about this year?
I am very excited about joining the community of TCS and focusing on teaching science and math.
Where is your favorite vacation spot?
My favorite vacation I’ve ever had was on the Salmon River in Idaho.  One week of floating down a pristine river in the Sawteeth Mountains, catching cutthroat trout, and watching otters play on the rocks with not a cell phone tower around is my idea of a great vacation.
Which fictional character would you most like to meet?
My favorite fictional character is a little obscure: the book series is called “The Iron Druid Chronicles” by Kevin Hearne.  The character comes into the story in book 6.  He is the arch druid, Owaine O’Kennady, a consummate crotchety old man with a soft spot for children and a darling killer sloth named Shlomoh, and an absolute dedication to Gaia, the living spirit of the earth.
