Navigating the High School Transition: Insights from TCS Alumni

By Justin Ryder
Director of Upper School

On Oct. 1, The Children’s School hosted “Looking Ahead to High School,” featuring a panel of TCS alumni students and parents discussing the transition from middle school at TCS to high school. The conversation covered their experiences before, during, and after graduation, highlighting how TCS helped them navigate this important milestone. They also shared advice for students and families currently preparing for high school.

Here are some key takeaways from the panel discussion, featuring themes and insights from our alumni panelists.

From TCS Student Alumni:

What was the biggest difference between middle school at TCS and high school?

The most significant difference was the transition from small, intimate classes to a much larger school environment. Many students found it more challenging to connect with teachers and build relationships in the same way they did at TCS, but all mentioned they learned the skills they needed to navigate through these challenges while at TCS.

How did you adjust to the academic demands of high school?

Students emphasized the importance of developing effective study habits. They recommended exploring different study strategies to find what works best and reaching out to teachers for help early on. The skills they learned at TCS, like time management and project-based learning, were invaluable in navigating high school academics.

For students with learning differences, what was your experience with the application process and support in high school?

TCS provided a strong foundation for students with learning differences. They learned how to advocate for themselves and utilize resources effectively. However, it’s crucial to continue to advocate for your needs and seek support when needed, as high school presents new challenges.

What advice would you give to a current TCS middle school student about to start high school?

  • Get involved in extracurricular activities to meet new people and explore your interests.
  • Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try new things.
  • Be proactive about building relationships with teachers and seeking help when needed.
  • Stay true to yourself and find your people.

From TCS Parent Alumni:

What advice would you give to parents navigating the high school application process?

  • Involve your child in every step of the process and allow them to lead the decision-making as much as possible.
  • Prioritize finding a school that is the right fit for your child’s personality, interests, and learning style.
  • Look beyond academics and consider factors like school culture, extracurricular opportunities, and diversity.

How did TCS prepare your child for the academic and social transition to high school?

TCS provided a solid academic foundation, particularly in writing, math, and project-based learning. The school’s emphasis on community and personal growth also equipped students with essential social-emotional skills.

What were your priorities when choosing a high school for your child?

Parents prioritized:

  • Fit: Finding a school where their child would feel comfortable, supported, and able to be themselves.
  • Opportunities: Seeking a school with robust academics, diverse extracurricular activities, and opportunities for growth.
  • Community: Looking for a school with a welcoming and inclusive community that reflects their family’s values.

How can parents best support their children during the transition to high school?

  • Encourage open communication and provide a safe space for your child to share their concerns and successes.
  • Help them stay organized and manage their time effectively.
  • Continue to advocate for their needs and support their involvement in activities that bring them joy and fulfillment.
