Slowing the Summer Slide
Summer learning should not be separate from summer fun. There are a number of ways to keep kids’ brains in the game, even as they are looking forward to their break from the classroom. The summer bridge program is designed to curb the summer learning slide and maintain and strengthen students’ academic edge. This program provides ongoing opportunities to let a child’s imagination run wild and stimulate creativity as they learn and practice essential literacy and math skills. Bridging learning over the summer provides students greater confidence as learners, to ask and answer more questions, listen and follow directions, and are better able to work in groups as well as independently.
For students that need additional differentiation, we offer explicit instruction that break tasks down into smaller segments. With a Resource teacher inside the camp classroom, small groups of students are given direct, specialized instruction and academic remediation and assistance.
Students will be learning math and language skills tailored to their needs. Just like during the school year, learning will take place through games and play. We strongly recommend that students attend two consecutive weeks of Summer Bridge to get the full benefit of the program. A learning exhibition will take place at the end of the two-week session.
