Keeping Plastic Out of Landfills

We are so proud of sixth grader, Julianne, and the hard work she’s put into reducing the number of plastic water bottles ending up in landfills! This semester in Naimah’s math class, Julianne learned more about water rights and how global access to water impacts everyone. Julianne knows that kids have the power to change the world, so she created an action plan to help reduce the number of water bottles being thrown out at school. More than 200 people to signed her petition asking Wholesome Tummies, the company who delivers lunches to TCS students, to stop including bottled water in lunches.

“Plastic is bad for the Earth,” said Julianne. “Not all bottled water gets recycled, and it creates mountains of trash and breaks down and gets into drinking water.”

Wholesome Tummies loved that Julianne was trying to making a lasting change through her project and after seeing Julianne’s petition, was excited to move in a more environmentally sustainable direction. Knowing that kids already bring refillable water bottles to school, Wholesome Tummies stopped including bottled water on lunch orders this week, and they plan to remove bottled water as a drink choice with all lunches next school year.

Because of Julianne’s efforts, about 250 bottles of water each week won’t end up in landfills. At TCS, we know that kids drive positive change in the world and Julianne is a great example of that, way to go!
