It was not easy peeling TCS student Harrison Taylor away from TCS’s Innovator’s Playground at the Decatur Maker Faire this past October. After the faire and several requests for cardboard boxes, empty containers, scotch tape, and anything recyclable, Kelley (our very own TCS art teacher) and Trevor Taylor knew it was time to create a makerspace for their pre-primary son Harrison, who has a passion for tinkering and building.
Kelley said it was one year ago that Harrison assembled a clothing dryer, which spawned a new passion for play and creation. As his imagination grew larger, so did his need for more space. Kelley and Trevor knew this was an important passion to foster for Harrison and built him his very own makerspace in the basement of their home, a Do-It-Yourself area where he can collaborate, create, invent, and learn. His space is equipped with new shelving units for storage, tools, building materials, and lots of room for teamwork. With a little help from Trevor, Harrison recently constructed a miniature car, complete with a wooden steering wheel!
Harrison loves working alongside his father, who is a member of the Decatur Makers, a Do-It-Yourself community in which like-minded people use the same space to collaborate and create as each member brings forth knowledge, skills, and tools to work on projects. Harrison has also visited the Decatur Makers with his dad to build upon the hands-on skills he is learning in the classroom. We can’t wait to see where Harrison’s imagination and resourcefulness takes him next!
